“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But he must ask, in faith, without doubting” (James 1:5,6a Berean Study Bible).
Wisdom is a gift that is often defined as a revelation of the Holy Spirit (James 3:17). In Proverbs wisdom is a person. In Exodus wisdom is directly connected to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit comes alongside ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things for the plan of God! Wisdom can also be defined as applying what you know to be true. You are a wise person when you apply God’s Word to your life.
Discernment is the ability to judge well. In Christian contexts discernment is perception in the absence of judgment with a view to obtaining spiritual guidance and understanding. The word can describe the process of determining God’s desire, His will in a situation or identifying the true nature of a thing; discerning something that is good or bad; right or wrong etc.
Prayer points to humility
If you are seeking God’s wisdom and discernment humbly get down on your knees in desperation, with reverence of the Lord and pray earnestly from the heart, lowly in spirit in faith without doubting (Mark 11:24).
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10 NIV).
In this verse, fear is synonymous with reverence. Reverence is defined as to honor someone; a gesture of respect; a state of being revered; to adore; to deify; to glorify; to worship.
The Word of God is supernatural, its riches are for us to discover
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two edge sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12 NKJV).
You would be wise to apply God’s Word to your life
Our first place to seek wisdom and discernment is in God’s Word. The Word of God is our road map to divine knowledge, truth, understanding, power and freedom. It gives us the truth in how to live the abundant life. Embrace God’s Word, study it, meditate on it, and apply it. “Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life. You can make many plans, but the LORD’S purpose will prevail” (Proverbs 19:20,21 NLT).
A Prayer For Godly Wisdom And Discernment
‘God speaks to those who take time to listen and He listens to those who take time to pray.’ Author Unknown
I pray earnestly for wisdom and discernment. That I get my nourishment from You. For You are the bread of life that sustains and satisfies my hunger. You are the living water that quenches my thirst. You are the light that guides my way. You are the One who provides all wisdom. Teach me how to fervently pray without ceasing, in humility, Spirit and Truth and in faith without doubting. Help me stay on course and sustain my affection and loyalty to You and that I turn to You for guidance and direction. As I witness to the world Your unconditional love, forgiveness of sins, redemption, salvation, grace, mercy and faithfulness, I pray that I give You full glory. Help me treat all with respect and love, forgiving others and asking for forgiveness myself when needed. I pray that my life will reflect You. I desire to live my life on my knees in prayer so that every moment of every day I could be filled with the wonder of Your love, the freedom of Your Spirit, the joy of knowing You and the high of being in Your presence. When I pray I don’t have to worry where I’m going for I know that You will guide me. “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you” (Jeremiah 29:11,12 Berean Study Bible).
